ABSTRACT

Despite the evident upsurge of e-commerce (EC) over the past decades, the peak of online demand caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the huge involvement of micro and small enterprises (MSEs) in the online businesses to survive, the extant literature has neglected to analyse how MSEs orchestrate their resources between internal and external investments. Past studies, also in the case of SMEs, have tended to adopt a more firm-centric perspective focusing on the organisational conditions that determine firms' performance after the usage of EC, failing to explore the inter-organisational relations between MSEs and other actors in their ecosystem. Indeed, as MSEs may suffer from liability of smallness and lack of resources, they may rely more than other actors on the nexus of relations that emerge within the digital ecosystem generated through the usage of EC platforms. By relying on 37 interviews with owners or managers of MSEs operating in the food and beverage industry, we investigate the dynamics of resource distribution between MSEs and the other actors in the EC ecosystem. We identified the changes in interdependencies, the information asymmetries, and the power imbalances related to the interplay between MSEs and other actors within the EC ecosystem. ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to explore (a) the approaches to corporate social responsibility (CSR) implemented by e-commerce platforms in China during the early stage of coronavirus disease 2019 (ESCOVID-19) and (b) the factors associated with the platforms' choice of these approaches. METHODS: We collected the CSR data from the Internet during ESCOVID-19. Conventional content analysis was used to develop the targeted approaches. Finally, based on the frequency analysis of each approach, rank-based nonparametric testing was conducted to answer objective (b). RESULTS: Three main approaches (ie, donative CSR actions, responsive CSR actions, and strategic CSR actions) and 8 subapproaches were implemented. The strategic approach was the most frequently used approach. The platforms with higher market size implemented more donative and strategic CSR actions than did the platforms with lower market size. Donative CSR actions were significantly implemented in the earlier period, while strategic CSR actions were significantly implemented in the later period. CONCLUSIONS: Our research highlights the importance of e-commerce platforms to help the public survive and identifies that market size and time were associated with the platforms' CSR choice. The design of prevention and control policies should incorporate and support e-commerce platforms and evaluate the factors when confronting future public health crises.

ABSTRACT

E-commerce is an emerging market for every business and it has been started to discuss whether the new pandemic context changed the dynamics of this platform. The aim of this study is to investigate how pandemic anxiety has influenced the relationship between the perceptions of e-commerce platforms and purchase intentions. This study examines the moderation effect of pandemic anxiety on the relationship between the effectiveness and economic benefits of e-commerce platforms and online purchase intention. 513 individuals participated in the cross-sectional research survey in which, the perceived effectiveness of e-commerce platforms, economic benefits, pandemic anxiety, and online purchase intentions were measured. The quantitative analysis revealed that pandemic anxiety negatively moderates the relationship between the economic benefit and online purchase intention. Pandemic anxiety seems to alter the economically oriented customer choices and intentions. Our findings reveal that pandemic anxiety negatively moderates the economic benefits and purchase intentions relationship in e-commerce. Individuals in the face of the pandemic threat, seem to choose to invest their material resources to save biological entities and withdrawal from seeking cost reduction in e-commerce activities. We think that the priority of economic benefit in e-commerce changed to saving health due to the pandemic context. © All rights reserved 2022 Transnational Press London
